Alexandra Navas: Royal Bird (Ave Real), a totem woven for the flight upwards

Royal Bird (Ave Real) is a textile sculpture by the Colombian artist Alexandra Navas, part of her Totems series. Navas weaves these small sculptures as figures of offering and protection, inspired by pre-Columbian statuettes. This one takes the shape of a mythological bird, a cross between an Amazonian heron and a peacock, a symbol of beauty, purity and power.

In the indigenous cultures of the Amazon, birds are sacred animals, revered for their plumage, their song, their natural powers and their gift of flight. In shamanic rituals they embody the flight to the world above, helping the shaman reach total vision. They also stand for the initiate, who passes through trials of growth before rising from the earthly world to the spiritual one. Inside the piece Navas placed a clear quartz, the crystal of the highest vibration, a powerful healer and transmuter of energy. Like all her Totems, Royal Bird is made to work as a protective amulet for the space it inhabits.
